There are no commercial deep sea fishing vessels available on Pemba - when required we bring in deep sea fishing boats from Zanzibar. It is therefore required a minimum booking of 3 days for this activity. The price for the season 2009/2010 is Euro 3.000 for three days. The price includes the relocation of the vessel from Zanzibar, 3 days of fishing, boat captain, crew, tackle and bait.
Close to shore along the west coast, immediately off Pemba's beaches, regular catches include rainbow runners, bonito, kingfish, barracuda and wahoo.
The big game fishing in the Pemba channel is as good as it gets, with a record breaking catch of a giant travally. There are no less than 6 varieties of Billfish in the Pemba Channel, huge sharks (Mako, Tiger, Hammerhead to name a few), tuna, large wahoo, King fish, Dorado, barracuda, giant travally plus many others. In peak Marlin season, the billfish and tunas move right up to the coast line making Pemba very interesting for fishing enthusiasts.
Basically the season falls into 2 patterns, with the Tuna season running from August to October. The Billfish season for big marlins and sailfish is in November till March, where the largest catches of Black and Blue Marlins are caught in September till December.
In between these main seasons the game fish are still always here. Large Tuna can reach 90 kilos, with many schools of 50 kilos running through the Pemba channel.

Canoe trawling. Right off the reefs along the west coast is the easiest way to bring back a fresh fish for the table. Fishing from a long canoe with 4 lines using jigs and artificial lures will bring Dorado, Kingfish, wahoo, bonito as well as rainbow runners all to the surface. 2-3 hours is usually enough to catch a few good size table fish. This can be organized with no prior notice and is ideal for a first experience. Book it separately or include it as part of a day trip.
Motor boat trawling. We provide a comfortable shaded boat, 2 experienced crews, rods and tackle. The idea is to follow the birds that run up and down the coastline, often no further than just off our beach. The best catches are usually north of the light house where the Pemba channel joins the Indian Ocean creating currents and off reefs ideal for this type of trawling. Our rods and reels are medium tackle, so if you are an avid light rod fishing enthusiast, please do bring your own rod and reels. Best times to go are usually early morning, or late afternoons.
